A great construction leader doesn’t just build projects. We build teams, culture, and a legacy that stands the test of time. Throughout my 32 years leading Absher Construction Company, I’ve developed leadership principles that have helped our company thrive for over three generations.

Build on a Strong Foundation: Vision & Core Values
Every great building starts with a solid foundation, and leadership is no different. Years ago, our ownership team had a realization—we were running a successful company, but we couldn’t clearly define our purpose. Something was missing.
So, we took a step back.
During a retreat, we challenged ourselves to dig deeper and uncover what truly drove us. That moment reshaped everything. We defined our core purpose: "To create and build community with vision and compassion." It wasn’t just a catchy slogan—it became the foundation of how we led our teams and approached every project.
Have you ever experienced that moment when everything just clicks? That’s what happened when we aligned our company around this purpose. Decisions became clearer, our teams became more engaged, and our work took on a greater meaning.
Cultivate the Right Team for the Right Projects
At Absher Construction, we've found that success depends on having the right people in the right roles. This means not just hiring talented individuals, but creating a culture where people's strengths complement each other and align with our company values: caring about people, servant leadership, doing things right, and doing right things.
Just as a well-designed building requires various specialists working in harmony—architects, engineers, craftspeople—a successful construction company requires thoughtful attention to team composition. We look beyond technical skills to find people who share our commitment to innovation and excellence.
"When you have the right people in the right seats on the bus," as I often tell my team, "the journey becomes not just successful, but transformative."
Lead with Collaboration and Communication
Success on a job site isn’t just about building structures. It’s about building strong teams. At Absher Construction, we found that when we focused only on the bottom line, some partners felt disconnected from the bigger picture. But when we prioritized collaboration and community, engagement and efficiency improved across the board.
Innovation in construction isn’t just about using new materials or technology. It’s also about finding better ways to work together. At Absher, we believe in bringing everyone to the table early so that owners, designers, and builders can align expectations, challenges, and goals from the start. This team-first mindset has helped us tackle complex projects more efficiently, reduce misunderstandings, and maintain a commitment to quality and excellence.
Building for Enduring Excellence: My Mindset for Success as a Construction Leader
We've never measured success by just finishing a project on time or under budget. What matters is what we leave behind. By choosing to work on projects that truly benefit communities—whether it’s a school, a hospital, or a public space—we ensure that our work has lasting value.
This mindset has changed how we approach business. It’s no longer just about winning contracts; it’s about building something meaningful that stands the test of time. When we focus on quality, integrity, and a higher purpose, success naturally follows.
The Fab Four Pillars of Excellence Every Leader Needs
A strong foundation, the right team, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence—these are the principles that define great leadership in construction and beyond.
Interestingly, these same lessons are at the core of The Fab Four Pillars of Excellence, a framework I explore in my book, inspired by one of the most iconic teams in history—The Beatles. Just like a great band, a great company thrives when the right people come together with a shared vision.
