I Saw Her Standing There

You will only find instant connection if you are open to it...

A lively dance floor seen from across a crowded room, warm light catching the faces of people caught in a moment of joyful connection

The opening track of The Beatles' debut album "Please Please Me" introduced the world to an energy that would transform music forever. With its infectious count-in — "One, two, three, FOUR!" — Paul launches us into a thrilling account of an unforgettable first encounter. This raw, energetic track captures that electric moment when two people connect for the first time — providing energy for our "Come Together" theme this month.

What makes this song particularly fascinating is its authentic origins. Paul began writing it in 1962 when he was just 20 years old, initially calling it "Seventeen" after the age of the girl in the song. The lyrics came from Paul's experiences at Liverpool dances, where young people would come together to connect, dance, and perhaps find romance. Paul later recalled writing it with John in the front living room of his family home at 20 Forthlin Road, another example of Paul and John’s collaborative process.

The song's remarkable energy comes from its primal simplicity — a driving beat paired with a story nearly everyone can relate to: that moment when you first notice someone special across a crowded room. The Beatles understood that human connection often begins with that spark of recognition, that instant when everything else fades into the background and a potential relationship takes center stage.

While the connecting spark in “I Saw Her Standing There" is a romantic one, that spark can apply to most any human connection. It is the initial spark where we realize that we are on the same wavelength as another person – whether it is over business, research, the arts, or a potential lifelong friend or partner, those sparks are exciting and all too rare.

Daily Challenge

Today, I will stay open to the possibility of meaningful new connections. I'll put down my phone in social settings and fully engage with the people around me.

Reflections

When was the last time you experienced that electric moment of connection with someone new? What would change if you approached your next social gathering looking for authentic connection rather than distracted networking?
